Super Fit Challenge: Week 2

We are in the second week of our eight-week super fit family challenge.  If you are just joining us, read the program overview before getting started.

Week 2 Challenge:  As a family, learn to read food labels by studying items in your kitchen.  Arrange your schedule and plan to shop together for groceries once a month and be sure to read food labels.  Allow the kids to make the shopping list of make suggestions about what to buy.  Guide them to select healthy options.  Explain why one item instead of another.

Exercise:  Begin planning exercise for the week for each family member.  Remember to use your pedometer daily and aim for 10,000 steps.  Keep a record of your daily steps so Andrea Thomas can record them into the General Conference Step for Life site.

Get Certified as a Vegetarian Food Instructor!

Metropolitan's Health Department has partnered with Dr. Joycelyn Peterson, a registered dietitian, to offer a vegetarian food instructor (VFI) certification course.  The course dates are Friday, March 31st to Sunday, April 2nd, and the location is The Hope Center, 18811 New Hampshire Ave, Ashton, MD  20861 (across the street from Emmanuel Brinklow Church).

The course classes will focus on the benefits of fiber rich foods, menu planning, the effects of the great grain robbery in the food industry, creative uses for beans, vegan cuisine, and low calorie desserts.  The registration fee is $220 and includes a course manual, a cookbook, food for demonstration adn sampling, a supermarket shopping tour, and a five-year certificate as a VFI issued upon completion.

Register by February 28 and receive the early bird special of $190.  To receive the discount, an initial deposit of $50 is requested by February 1st, with a second deposit installment of $50 by February 28th.  To register and receive more information, contact Dorrel McLaren at This email address is being protected from spambots. Super Fit Challenge: Week 1

We are in the first week of our eight-week super fit family challenge.  Read the program overview before getting started.

Week 1 Challenge: Each person should drink half his/her weight, in ounces, of pure water every day (e.g., if you weigh 100 pounds, drink 50 ounces of water per day). Start each day with 16 ounces of warm or room temperature water before breakfast, then spread the balance over the rest of the day.

Exercise:  Purchase a pedometer or use app on your cell phone to calculate steps. Each person’s goal is to walk 10,000 steps per day, or get as close as possible. Start out aiming for 2,000 steps if you have not been exercising regularly. 10,000 steps is about about 5 miles.

Super Fit Tracking

Get a blank notebook and start a Health Journal to keep track of progress during the challenge. Calculate and record the following for each family member:
