I’m always amazed at the object lessons Christ teaches me through my interaction with children. This year, I had the opportunity to serve as a small group leader for our Athens Vacation Bible School program. I thoroughly enjoyed my vibrant troop of 6-9 year olds. I can’t tell you how many times I laughed till I cried at the comedy those children brought me every single day. I’d like to share the lessons I learned from a short conversation I had with a little girl on the last day of VBS....

2013 is just around the corner. When did that happen? Didn't we just start the book of Acts? Well - we've come to the end. We've seen Saul stone Stephen, encounter Christ on the road to Damascus and obtain a new identity - Paul, become a powerful orator for Christ, and set his sights determinedly towards Rome, despite beatings, arrests, and shipwrecks. We've joined a Secret Society; we've discovered a Convenient Season; we've learned what it is to be Duty Bound, and we're working on Be[ing] Ready. It's been a year of ups and downs, twists and turns, but with God's help, our two pastors have helped navigate us safely almost to the end of 2012.
Q2 SS-2012 Lesson 3: Spiritual Gifts for Evangelism and Witnessing (read Lesson 3)
…. the one that is given to you by the Holy Spirit. That amazed me. Let’s explore it from the text.
“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-12, NKJV).
Two things that stood out in my study were firstly, gifts are given and secondly, they are given by a specific being: the Holy Spirit. Apparently, gifts are not something that we are born with - they are not talents, right? Interesting! So we can actually have talented church leaders who may not have received the gift for that ministry. I always wondered how a once presumptuous sinner like myself (emphasis on “presumptuous”) could have still led out in church appointed positions. Reminds me about that sermon Pastor Johns preached on Bar-Jesus - "Behind Enemy Lines".
