tn whats love got to do with it wide t nvQ2 SS-2012 Lesson 10: A Love Response (read lesson 10)

I've recently developed a desire to go out witnessing and evangelising, and asked myself, "What's my motivation? Why do I want to go and witness to other people?"

Growing up in a Christian home it was a given that there are things you do and don't do.  For instance, you have to go to church; you must endeavor to keep all the commandments, especially the fourth one; you must not drink alcohol, smoke, or take drugs.  These and many other do's and don'ts were taught to us.  But "Why?"

We were also taught that there is right and wrong, and we must do what's right and avoid doing wrong; but what is my motivation to do what is right?  Is it merely out of obligation that I do these things?  Is it just because I think that this is what I am supposed to do?

Everything we do is motivated by something, and the lesson this week is seeking to show us that our desires to do right and be Christ-like must be motivated be our LOVE for Christ.  That love for Christ comes the same way we come to love others:  by taking time to get to know them.  The more time we spend with Christ, the easier it is to love Him, as we come to understand how much He loves us.

As we consider why we want to be witnesses for Christ, let us remember the prayers of the Pharisee and the Publican in Luke 18:10-14.  We do not witness so that we can be noticed by others.  We do not witness out of a legalistic obligation to Christ.  We do not witness so that we can be saved.  Rather, we recognize how much we need Him and how much He loves us; and because of this, we desire to serve Him and share His love with others.  We serve Him because we love Him.

"Such love is without a parallel. Children of the heavenly King!  Precious promise!  Theme for the most profound meditation!  The matchless love of God for a world that did not love Him!  The thought has a subduing power upon the soul and brings the mind into captivity to the will of God." Steps to Christ, p.15

Let's spread our love for our Creator, Redeemer, and soon-coming King, Jesus Christ.
