Awesome was the experience we had when Metro members, friends and supporters went to the Community For Creative Non-Violence shelter (CCNV) after church service on May 25 to minister to the homeless. It was our third time for the year serving at CCNV and our second time hosting a worship service there. Yes, we had church at CCNV after having had church at Metro!
As shelter residents entered the room to get a meal and some free items, they were able to participate in our worship service. Some clapped as they moved forward in line. A few left after receiving their plates and free goodies, but some sat and and stayed for the program while they ate.
Earle Hall, Sr. recited a poem he wrote - "One Day at a Time"; the poem spoke of the importance of adhering to God's word and taking life one day at a time. One of the residents later shared with Earle that he felt that the poem was written especially for him. Theo Milford, Latéy Bradford and Kryselle Baptiste led out in praise and worship, accompanied by Jason Craig on keyboard. Shelter residents sang, clapped, waved their hands in the air and swayed to the music.
Some of the residents spontaneously participated in the program! One resident - Brother Butch - was so moved during praise and worship that he stood as he sang, leading Theo to invite him to the mic where he shared with the group what he was grateful to God for. Another resident - Sister Tisha - felt divinely inspired to perform a Gospel rap proclaiming the soon coming of Christ. Bible worker Sharon Jones entertained us with a catchy musical selection with her guitar. The guest speaker was Ronnie Jones, whose incredible, remarkable testimony had the audience audibly engaged throughout his presentation.
The program ended with raffle drawings for gift bags containing toiletries, personal care items and bibles that held a small surprise inside. Some of our members heard residents stating that they were going to stay until the end for a chance to win a prize. Sister Raji, acting as our Vanna White, called out the winning numbers.

Many thanks to all of our Metro members who donated toilet paper, which was our special giveaway item, and cases of bottled water. We served 194 people! We took 215 rolls of toilet paper and 232 specially labeled bottles of water with us to CCNV, so we had more than enough to give. We distributed 259 loads of powdered detergent (left over special giveaway item from the March homeless outreach) and 104 copies of The Ministry of Healing. A special thanks to Virginia Ross Charles who donated 3 bottles of liquid detergent for the March outreach that we included in the gift bags raffled off at the May outreach. Thanks to Aunty Connie's Kitchen for contributing towards our delicious menu. (Contact Connie Thompson for catering or for orders.) Last, but certainly not least, a heartfelt thanks to everyone who volunteered or assisted in making the outreach a blessing to the residents of CCNV.
We've incuded a video montage from the May 25 outreach below. Pictures from the May program, and our other outreach activities can be seen on our new Facebook page (the page is public, so you don't need a Facebook account to see it).
