imageHas there been an increase number of news stories about black men and police officers in “difficult” situations? Visions of the violence in Ferguson, MO, after the shooting of teenager Mike Brown may still be fresh in your mind. But there was recently this story of a man who was shot by a cop while attempting to get the license and registration that the officer asked him to produce. Or this confusing story of a man being shot in a Walmart while holding a BB gun (that purportedly he was attempting to purchase).

image1. Eric Thomas  If you’re anything like me, you heard Eric Thomas’ voice looooong before you actually associated a name with the jarring, disruptive, high-energy, purposed motivational, err, no, scratch that, INSPIRATIONAL speaking that he brings. Well, he’ll be kicking off #Destined2014 with his thought leadership and his dynamic style as an inspirational speaker for Metro on October 18 . If you’re looking a jump start to your destiny, trust us, Eric Thomas, will encourage you to go after what’s yours. Don’t be surprised if he asks, point blank: Do you want success more than you want to breathe? In addition, gospel-recording artist Kevin Levar will be here to sing his latest song “Your Destiny”. Take a deep breath, and join us on October 18!

tn jermeydogood-coverOf all the problems in the world, you would think a disease that affects 0.002% of the population would receive relatively little attention. And yet, thanks to the latest social media craze, more than 3 million people worldwide donated more than $100 million in August alone to a charitable organization that funds research on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a neurodegenerative condition also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

tn rickyblog-1I’ve walked out of my house at least once a day for the last nine years.  Proud to be a homeowner.  Proud that every brick that lay upon that concrete foundation bore my name.  On this particular day however, the responsibilities of homeownership overlapped with the critical nature of human existence.

school-supply-drive-metro-webThe Back-2-School season is well underway – kids and parents everywhere are shopping for new clothes, shoes, school supplies, lunch boxes…the list goes on.  Last year our church blessed the students and families of Ridgecrest and GE Peters Elementary Schools through the distribution of nearly 400 backpacks filled with school supplies. Let’s out-do ourselves, Metro! This year let’s reach MORE STUDENTS and give away MORE SUPPLIES than before.

tn Online Giving wide tWhat do you do with your tithe and offering if you happen to miss a Sabbath service?  Bring it the following week?  There aren’t any official studies to prove it, but many authors believe that you're likely to "forget" to make that contribution.  There are ways that you can avoid this happening to you, especially as we're in the middle of summer and people are enjoying vacations.

imageFellow-citizens; above your national, tumultuous joy, I hear the mournful wail of millions! Whose chains, heavy and grievous yesterday, are, today, rendered more intolerable by the jubilee shouts that reach them. If I do forget, if I do not faithfully remember those bleeding children of sorrow this day, ‘may my right hand forget her cunning, and may my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth!’ To forget them, to pass lightly over their wrongs, and to chime in with the popular theme, would be treason most scandalous and shocking, and would make me a reproach before God and the world. My subject, then fellow-citizens, is AMERICAN SLAVERY.”

P6070023As we set up on Sabbath, June 7, for the clothing drive at Ridgecrest Elementary School, I wondered if our supplies would be enough for the families that were coming.  I watched in anticipation as our volunteers folded and organized the women's clothes, the men's clothes, baby clothes, shoes, toys, toiletries, bread, food, etc.

omaris-groupOn Sabbath June 7, I was the team lead for a small group of volunteers who participated in the Beyond the Walls “Clean Up Hyattsville” outreach activity.  It first appeared that our activity was going to be a wash, because when we got to Huerich Park, our assigned location, we couldn’t find the park ranger.  We were supposed to meet her to get our cleaning supplies (gloves, bags, etc.).  What to do?  We “radioed” back in to “headquarters” (Melissa and Vonric) for support, but while we were waiting on them to track down the ranger, we decided that we would complete this outreach on our own!  If we couldn’t find supplies, we would get our own supplies.
