Through the Beyond the Walls effort on April 5, I was blessed with the opportunity to minister with the Children's Church team led by Tamara Sam. When the children arrived at the MAC, they were assigned to different workstations to create beautiful handmade cards for the residents of Chillum Oaks Senior Living Center. After simple instructions, the children quickly slipped into creative mode and out came the glitter, glue, stickers, markers and paper! They were all very intentional about making sure their masterpieces displayed beautiful images and encouraging words.
After the staff collected the cards, a few of the older children were given the opportunity to walk over (with adult supervision, of course) to Chillum Oaks to deliver the cards from door to door. My group of young ladies excitedly took over the first floor. They found so much joy in getting their own door to knock on and deliver a card. Their excitement was a reminder to me that God truly loves a cheerful giver. If the residents weren't home, we simply slid their cards underneath their doors.
The most memorable moment happened when we knocked on the door of a beautiful older woman named Ms. Virginia. Not only did Ms. Virginia open her door, but she invited us in! By the end of the visit, there were over 12 children and adults in Ms. Virginia's tiny room. We sang songs and shared stories. We learned that at 94 years old, she still goes beyond the walls of her room to deliver food to people in need. She even teaches the Sunday School lesson at her church! We all really enjoyed our visit with her and after prayer and many hugs, we went on our way.
Personally, I plan to go back and visit Ms. Virginia again. She was such a delightful person to meet and had it not been for Beyond the Walls, we may not have ever crossed paths. I'm truly thankful for the experience and I look forward to going beyond the walls of our church again!
