According to popular Christian thought, the most basic questions everyone faces in life are: “Why am I here? What is my purpose?” While we may agree with this to varying degrees, I believe these questions are only answered after we’ve been properly introduced to the Person that put us here – the One who watched us as we were being formed in utter seclusion, and woven together in the dark of the womb. (Psalm 139:15 NLT). That person is Jesus the Christ, “the one through whom God created everything”. Since “everything has been created through him and for him” (Colossians 1:16 NLT), who better to answer those questions?
Many of us have been “in the faith” for a very long time and feel we have advanced beyond the elementary aspects of our faith. We may feel like our time is better spent searching the deep things of God. Others search the internet seeking answers and reasons to believe or disbelieve. We search through our Twitter and Instagram feeds looking to favorite, retweet, like or repost someone else’s “deep thought”. Our study of the Bible is limited to what our Bible app has given us as the quote of the day. All the while Jesus is knocking at the door of our hearts seeking to sup with us.
He is saying to this generation, as He has to the ones that have preceded it, “You search the Scriptures because you believe they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! Yet you refuse to come to me so that I can give you this eternal life.” (John 5:39-40 NLT). In other words: you search for purpose, believing this will give meaning and significance to your life but you will not come to Me, the only one who can guarantee you find these.
The longer we search everything else instead of going to Jesus, the longer our lives will feel empty, destitute and void of true significance. This significance is not found in money, sex, fashion or the latest technology. It is only found in a Person and His name is Jesus. Join us as we, over the next 13 weeks, walk through one of the single, greatest books ever written about how to find and secure a relationship with the our Master, Lord and friend – Jesus: Steps to Christ. Through this process we will endeavor to find our purpose by leading a Person Driven Life.
