tn secret hearts wideIt was consummated at conception. At first I was resistant. I couldn’t get over the fact that I was bound to this relationship without my consent. As time went by I realized that our love was real. Whenever I was stressed, we’d escape the fiery furnace of life and cuddle under the stars. Whenever I was depressed, we’d laugh until the rising of the sun and setting down of the same. Whenever I felt forgotten, our love reminded me that I was remembered. Whenever I felt rejected, our love told me that I was chosen. Whenever I felt angry, our love would bring me peace. And whenever I felt unloved, our union erased all doubt. I never thought I’d give up Jesse’s love.

tn r-ratedThe Oscars have come and gone. Hollywood continues to do its thing: art imitating life, they say. In reality, it’s not that simple: some movies have an agenda beyond pure entertainment; many movies are pure fantasy, divorced from any conceivable reality; and ultimately, Hollywood is a for-profit enterprise.

tn A Person Driven Life std confession tWe took a break from our Person Driven Life series to celebrate our African, African American and West Indian cultures, as well as our church’s history.  This week we return to our regularly scheduled program, resuming our study of the book Steps to Christ in an attempt to emulate the most impressive, yet enigmatic person in the history of the world – Jesus Christ.

tn tough times wide t nvAny member of Metro church will tell you that our family is made up of people from very different cultures. Even those of us of African descent know that a Nigerian is different from a Ghanaian, is different from a Guyanese, is different from a Jamaican, is different from a New Yorker, is different from a Floridian.

tn happy valentines day wide t NVLet's face it!  Many married men have little to no game, or, the once-revered game is utterly rusty.  Truth be told, but for your significant other's faith and belief system, you'd still be in perpetual bachelor status.  Add a couple of children to the mix, and these men have gotten even slacker in the spouse appreciation department.  Now, you're facing Valentine's Day - the most blatantly manufactured holiday on the calendar year.  Your knee-jerk reaction is to order some overpriced flowers, find a baby-sitter and take the missus out to dinner.  (By the way, if you already spent the money at FTD.com, I cannot help you there; you could have simply gone to Trader Joes).  I’m here to suggest that instead of taking your beloved to Ruby Tuesday or Applebees, you elevate your game a bit and take her to a real restaurant.  Who knows, she may be so impressed she'll be singing her own kosher version of Beyonce's Drunk in Love (off the Martinelli's, of course).

Freedom Fright tAn Arab chief tells a story of a spy who was captured and then sentenced to death by a general in the Persian army. This general had the strange custom of giving condemned criminals a choice between the firing squad and the big, black door. As the moment for execution drew near, the spy was brought to the Persian general, who asked the question, “What will it be: the firing squad or the big, black door?”

tn cry-of-the-oppressed std t nvYesterday, I found out that I am a slave owner.  69 slaves work for me.  What???? I'm black!  My ancestors were slaves!  I've seen Roots and 12 Years A Slave!!  How can I even remotely be involved in anything having to do with slavery???  And wait a minute - wasn't slavery abolished hundreds of years ago?  How could there be slaves anywhere for me to own?
